La mijloc de secol XIX in zona Strazii Mercur se afla Posta Veche, sau Posta Romaneasca (sau de cai). In 1867 Posta se muta intr-un local pe Str. Doamnei, iar terenul ramas este parcelat. Astfel apare Str. Mercur.

Deschisa initial intre Str. Posta Veche(Str. Nicolae Golescu de astazi) si Str. Pitar Mos. Mai tarziu a fost prelungita pana in Str. Dionisie Lupu de astazi.

In jur de 1890-91 numerele caselor sunt usor modificate 11 in 13 7 in 9. In unele instante se folosesc Nr. + (A, B. sau BIS) pentru aceiasi adresa.

In 1906 a inceput "taierea" Bulevardului Coltea intre Str. Clementei(C.A. Rosetti) si Str. Mercur(Pictor Verona). Acest segment includea si Str. Eldorado/Saguna(simu de astazi) care pana atuci a fost o fundatura.

Proiectul a impus exproprierea unor imobile, acestea fiind la nr. 10 si 12. O data cu deschiderea Bulevardului la nord de strada Mercur au fost expropriate si imobilele de la numerele 7, 9 si 11.

D-l Atanase Simu care cumparase o parte din aceste terenuri in anii dinainte, cu scopul de a ridica celebrul muzeu, a fost nevoit sa isi schimbe locatia mai ales marimea cladirii din cauza lipsei de spatiu. Astfel el cumpara proprietatea de la nr. 8-10 pe Str. Mercur, dar nu reuseste sa il convinga pe proprietarul de la Nr. 6 un anume Elil Rizu, care se pare ca era "recalcitrant.

In jur de 1920 Str. Mercur primeste numele de D. A. Sturdza in cinstea marelui om politic care a locuit aici , la nr, 11.

Regimul Comunist renumeste strada din nou, St. Pictor Verona si St. Arthur Verona.
