In jur de 1900 Marea Britanie era singura mare putere care nu avea un consulat permanent in Bucuresti, cu toate ca Anglia recunoscuse indpendenta Romaniei dupa Razboiul de Independenta si un Consul General a fost trimis la Bucuresti. Acesta, consulul, locuia intr-o casa inchiriata pe str. Dreapta, astazi Str. Jules Michelet Nr. 24. Aceasta a fost construita in caramida si finisata in 1900.

Pentru a rectifica situatia se ia hotararea de a cumpara proprietatea inchiriata de consul pentru a o transforma in "Legatia Engleza". Se recomanda si cumpararea unei alte proprietati adiacente pentru a mari spatiul uzabil. Cele doua proprietati au fost cumparate in 1908. Casa propriu zisa apartinea lui W.J. Alexandrescu care era considerat mental incompetent tranzactia fiind facilitata de gardianul acestuia A.G. Santza. Proprietatea adiacenta apartinea Lt. Col. L.D. Dobroneau, decedat, s i a fost cumparata de la lostenitorii acestuia.
In 1921 si 1928 cladirea a fost suprainaltata si extinsa. Si din nou in 1937.
Casa a fost grav afectata de cutremurul din 1940.
